The war on cancer started in 1971.   Cancer mortality rates have decreased by nearly one-third since 1971.  In 2010-11, many of the most commonly diagnosed cancers had ten-year survival rates of 50% or more. Now 98% in the US survive prostate cancer, 96% melanoma, and 92% breast cancer.  Clinical trials have played a pivotal role (Nina Bhardway et al, The fight against cancer, in The Frontiers of Medical Research (Science/AAAS, Washington, DC 2021 pg 9).  Though most clinical trials are driven by the pharmaceutical industry developing expensive new drugs, there are rare exceptions. Two NCI-sponsored trials in early stage breast cancer determined that the majority of women with the most common type of breast cancer can be spared adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery, reducing medical expenses and pharma income. (Nina Bhardway et al, The fight against cancer, in The Frontiers of Medical Research (Science/AAAS, Washington, DC 2021 pg 10).

After many years studying VC, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer.  I was fortunate that it was detected early, and was surgically removed.  But just from 72 to 79% of people survive bladder cancer.  Annually in the US there are 83,730 new cases of bladder cancer, and about 17,200 deaths.  One study found that the average cost of bladder cancer among patients surveyed was $65,158. On average, the study found that 60% of the costs ($39,393) were due to surveillance and treatment of recurrences. Unfortunately, the treatment to prevent recurrence requires 6 hospital visits for treatment, and prevented the cancer recurrence for 5 years just 10% of the time.

But Linus Pauling had proposed that megadoses of VC would cure cancer.  Having discovered that oral VC beyond 500 mg per 12 hours was excreted to the bladder, I conducted a clinical trial to determine the dose of VC that would maximize the bladder concentration.  That concentration turned out to be sufficient to kill cancer cells and prevent recurrence of bladder cancer. I developed a product, Triumph, and published a paper about why it is likely to be effective ("Two Grams BID is an Oral Dosage of VC to Reduce the Risk of Recurrence of Superficial Bladder Carcinoma", Folk, E., Downs, T.,  Ordman, A.B., J. Cancer Therapy 6, 169-176 (2015).
