LONG NOTES:

Suggestions for New Years Resolutions: Start taking the supplements on Roc’s list. Note below articles, about how to reduce the risk for mitochondrial failure, osteoarthritis, and atherosclerosis, all support taking those supplements.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a major cause of age-associated disease.  Mito-C has many ingredients to support mitochondria, thus the name Mito-C.  Niacin is also important. Further research on optimal dosage and age of intervention are warranted before recommending potential mitochondrial rejuvenating compounds for human use.

Vitamin D Inhibits Osteoarthritis by Modulating Interaction Between Vitamin D Receptor and NLRP3 in Macrophages

Melatonin Alleviates Age-Associated Endothelial Injury of Atherosclerosis via Regulating Telomere Function

Late‐life exercise mitigates skeletal muscle epigenetic aging-Aged mice (22-24 months old) subjected to a voluntary high-volume hypertrophic exercise training stimulus (progressive weighted wheel running, or PoWeR) had a lower DNA methylation age in skeletal muscle, as well as a more youthful overall methylation profile.

A behavioral program involving free meat substitutes can reduce meat intake and change psychosocial constructs consistent with a sustained reduction in meat intake.

Science 24 Dec pg 1573 – High fiber diet builds microbiome to improve clinical outcome of cancer treatments, AND glutamine supplements made antibiotics more effective

Metabolomics Study of Isocaloric Different Dietary Patterns on the Life Span in Healthy Population: How to prolong life by diet has been of great concern.

Non-targeted metabolomics was to identify 18 potential metabolites related to longevity.  But this study found that a mixture of fats, protein, and carbs are best, rather than emphasizing just one.

AARP: frying tends to triple the calories in foods, Soft drinks aren't your only enemy. Bottled teas, fancy coffee drinks and “fresh” lemonades can all be loaded with the sweet stuff, "Hidden sugars can be found in pasta sauces, yogurt, granola bars, instant oatmeal packets and breakfast cereals, Skip it: High-sodium instant meals (think: frozen pizzas), many ready-to-eat, processed foods like cake mixes, snack chips, ketchup, sweetened yogurt and “meat lovers” frozen pizzas add food coloring, sodium, preservatives and other hard-to-pronounce additives

THANKS, KEVIN: We should expect that global pandemics will become more the norm. Masking MAKES A DIFFERENCE along with social distancing. So, please do it!! The use of mRNA vaccines is on the cusp of some very exciting diminution of diseases that have become endemic in the human diaspora such as Zika, HIV, influenza, cytomegalovirus – so, keep your eye on the literature for even more viral dispositions in the coming year(s).  If you want data and science – check out this site. It’s chock full of information that we as health care providers need to digest for our patients. The use of mRNA as the vehicle for creating vaccines is MASSIVE! In the history of mankind, we’ve never been able to go from sequencing to vaccine production to distribution as quickly as we accomplished with this pandemic.  The massive disparities that exist in American society related to health care access continues to be the untold story of contemporary health care. It is a story that does not have the sex appeal of a pandemic but is the underbelly of our existing health care system – and, it must be addressed,

Musings in the twilight of my career

Author: Bruce N. Ames. ONE OF ROC’S IDOLS

Highlights

• Adequate levels of ~40 nutrients are necessary for optimizing human

longevity and preventing disease. • The Triage Theory provides a mechanistic rationale for the insidious damage resulting from nutrient inadequacies.

• New concepts are introduced: longevity proteins and longevity vitamins.

• Evidence is discussed for the existence of several as-yet-unrecognized

vitamins. • Vitamin D deficiency is discussed, with special reference to the

deleterious health effects on people of color.

Abstract- I present a summary of my research during the last few decades of research which focused on understanding the biochemical basis for maintaining an optimum metabolism to support long-term health. I realized that adequate levels of ∼40 vitamins and minerals needed as cofactors in thousands of metabolic reactions were critical for maintaining a healthy metabolism, and thus for longevity and prevention of chronic disease. Inadequate dietary intake of vitamins and minerals accelerates the risk of aging-associated diseases, leading to insidious damage. The Triage Theory provides a mechanistic rationale for such damage: shortage of a nutrient triggers a built-in rationing mechanism that allocates the scarce nutrient to proteins needed for immediate survival (survival proteins), at the expense of those needed for long-term survival (longevity proteins). Many as-yet-unknown longevity vitamins and proteins likely remain to be discovered. The fiber and nutrient-rich CHORI-bar was developed to fill gaps in inadequate diets; it yielded broadscale metabolic improvements. The health-related damages resulting from vitamin D deficiency and the positive effects of vitamin D supplementation were connected to numerous health-related problems, including the higher level of deficiency in people of color residing at northern latitudes. In general, prevention of degenerative diseases of aging requires expertise in metabolism, nutrition, biochemistry and regulatory functions.
