January nutrition notes
from Roc Nutrition Investigator
Short Notes: There is so much guidance for a healthy new year. With more than a quarter of Americans never exercising bodies or minds, these are challenging times. Short notes 1.Vast sums are wasted on treatments for back pain, 88% of treatments make it worse!; 2. a growing number of studies link dairy consumption with potentially problematic health outcomes, including faster aging and increased odds of developing cancer; 3. Zygosid-50 is the first treatment to restore near-normal cellular sensitivity to insulin, without side effects; 4. Physical inactivity is a primary cause of most chronic diseases; 5. Rating system for value of supplements: Spreadsheet to score your supplements; 6. Eating fiber while taking antibiotics aids maintenance and recovery of your microbiome; 7. When used as an adjunct to statins, a combination of EPA and DHA gave worse results than previously obtained with EPA alone; 8. Curcumin reduces inflammation; 9. From a kind reader: How fructose feeds cancer cells- Fructose, The common link in high blood pressure, insulin resistance, T2D, & obesity; 10. SAMe improves DNA methylation, improves mood, reduces joint discomfort and regenerates cartilage; 11. Resveratrol also activate sirtuins; 12. the VITAL study Vitamin D 2,000 IU, gave a suggestive 17% reduction in cancer deaths, is important for proper immune function in older adults, and to keep our gut barrier healthy; the omega-3 fatty acid intervention lowered the risk of heart attack by 28% and the risk of fatal heart attack by 50%; 13. Peanut allergy reduced by influence of co-factors such as exercise and sleep deprivation; 14. those who had received the BCG vaccination against tuberculosis were half as likely to develop Alzheimer’s as those who hadn’t; 15. Exercising before breakfast is better because it boosts insulin sensitivity; 16. RZL-12 converts white adipose tissue (WAT) into brown adipose tissue (BAT) after a single injection into subcutaneous fat; 17. resveratrol may increase lifespan 5%; 18. For treating inflammatory bowel disease (also known as IBD), xanthohumol have been a big success; 19. Many plants naturally contain chemicals that may protect the nervous system; Articles validating Mito-C formulation: 1. NAD+ promotes stem cell renewal. NAD sustains sirtuins that reduce DNA damage; 2. we can stop, and even reverse, the deterioration that until now we considered an inevitable part of aging by reducing inflammation of the brain; 3. DNA from damaged mitochondria promotes autoimmune disease; beneficial effects of polyphenols (with an emphasis on flavonoids) on cognitive function; 4. vitamin K deficiency can impact the proper function of the nervous system [Mito-C]; 5. vitamin C plays a vital role in gene expression and can be lifesaving for 24-hour recovery from sepsis; 6. Neurodegeneration is one area in Alzheimer’s disease where the production of oxidants leads to lasting damage – and represents a large opportunity for future therapy. Articles validating Triumph formula: high doses of vitamin C can turn from antioxidant to pro-oxidant, creating reactive oxygen molecules that can damage (and possibly kill) cancer cells; ; 2. sulforaphane (a compound from cruciferous vegetables) may be a practical strategy to deal with the health risks of poor air quality.
LONG NOTES Vast sums are wasted on treatments for back pain that make it worse – Economist, 1/18/20 pg 13. US spends $88M on backpain, vs $113M on cancer. 85% report non-specific back pain. Doctors give MRIs, 80% of which are useless. Scans find slipped discs. 87% who had spinal fusion found no benefit. Despite this, we’ve seen a growing number of studies that link dairy consumption with potentially problematic health outcomes, including faster aging and increased odds of developing cancer. Seemingly underscoring this body of research is a new study out of Brigham Young University, where researchers have found that switching from 2-percent to 1-percent milk is ‘significantly’ linked to longer telomeres and slower aging. The research was performed by Brigham Young University’s Larry Tucker, Ph.D.; the study involved more than 5,800 adults in the US. Based on the data, Tucker found that adults who consumed skim and 1-percent low-fat milk had also experienced ‘several years less biological aging’ when compared to people who consumed two-percent and whole milk. Fixing the root cause of diabetes. (TY WIN) Hebrew University of Jerusalem Professor Motti Chevion has developed Zygosid-50, the first treatment to restore near-normal cellular sensitivity to insulin, without side effects. Israel’s Concenter BioPharma is preparing to trial Zygosid-50 and give new hope to Type 2 diabetics.

(Sceince 3 Jan 2020 p38 An Astra Zeneca cardiovascular clinical trial with a combination of EPA and DHA gave worse results than previously obtained with EPA alone, when used as an adjunct to statins. Curcumin reduces inflammation. NAD+ promotes stem cell renewal. NAD sustains sirtuins that reduce DNA damage. Resveratrol also activate sirtuins. We now have the results of the largest and longest randomized trial – the VITAL study - of daily high-dose vitamin D (vitamin D3 [cholecalciferol], 2000 IU) and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (1 gram). Vitamin D gave a suggestive 17% reduction in cancer deaths, which became a 25% reduction in analysis that excluded the first two years of follow-up. the omega-3 fatty acid intervention lowered the risk of heart attack by 28% and the risk of fatal heart attack by 50% https://www.jns.org/new-drug-diagnostic-techniques-slow-and-even-reverse-cognitive-decline-from-aging/ Peanut allergy: influence of co-factors such as exercise and sleep deprivation on reactivity threshold to allergen DNA from damaged mitochondria promotes autoimmune disease-Science 366:1445 They found that those who had received the BCG vaccination against tuberculosis were half as likely to develop Alzheimer’s as those who hadn’t.

Exercising before breakfast is better because it boosts insulin sensitivity. the synthetic injectable molecule from Israeli startup Raziel Therapeutics melts fat cells. RZL-12 converts white adipose tissue (WAT) into brown adipose tissue (BAT) after a single injection into subcutaneous fat. a quick and dirty meta analysis of resveratrol's affect on life span is attached. I did it two years ago. The upshot? Living about 5% longer. LINUS PAULING NOTES WINTER 2019
vitamin D is important for proper immune function in older adults. It is important to keep our gut barrier healthy, For treating inflammatory bowel disease (also known as IBD), xanthohumol have been a big success. beneficial effects of polyphenols (with an emphasis on flavonoids) on cognitive function. Authenticity of botanical supplements is a big problem. Many plants naturally contain chemicals that may protect the nervous system. Dr. Douglas Feinstein speaking about vitamin K deficiency and how it can impact the proper function of the nervous system For an update on vitamin C, Dr. Jens Lykkesfeldt explored the effects of this vitamin on gene expression. Dr. Fiona Harrison addressed the vital role that vitamin C plays in the recovery from sepsis. giving sulforaphane (a compound from cruciferous vegetables) may be a practical strategy to deal with the health risks of poor air quality. Drs. Enrique Cadenas and Allan Butterfield started the day with discussions about redox biology in Alzheimer’s disease. Neurodegeneration is one area where the production of oxidants leads to lasting damage – and represents a large opportunity for future therapy. he demonstrated how high doses of vitamin C can turn from antioxidant to pro-oxidant, creating reactive oxygen molecules that can damage (and possibly kill) cancer cells. Cancer has redox vulnerabilities. – Roc, Nutrition Investigator
